Importance of Prasad in Hinduism

Importance of Prasad in Hinduism   The word ‘prasad’ means that which gives peace.  During any form of worship, ritual or ceremony, Hindus offer some items of food to the Lord. Puja is done with Bael leaves, flowers, Tulasi (Basil plant), Vibhuti and these are given as Prasada from the Lord. After offering to the god, the Prasad is shared between the devotees, members of their families and friends. It is believed that the lord is pleased even with the smallest offering with devotion and love. As Krishna says in the Bhagavadgita: "Patram Pushpam Phalam Toyam Yo Me Bhaktya Prayacchati; Tadaham Bhaktyupahritamasanami Prayatatmanah" It means that the lord accepts it with a loving heart, a leaf, a flower, a fruit or even water whoever offers with devotion. There is no need to offer costly items to god like gold, silver, dress etc. The mental attitude of the devotee offering to the lord is important. It is believed that the grace of the lord descends to the devotee through Prasa...

Stockholm is burning : Why the Swedish riots bode ill for Europe

By Harold Maass Rampaging immigrant youths have upended the country's reputation as a prosperous refuge Stockholm is burning. Yes, Stockholm, the Swedish capital, is in flames, after hundreds of immigrant youths rampaged through the streets for four straight nights, torching cars and buildings, hurling rocks through windows, and attacking police. The chaotic scenes are at odds with Sweden's reputation as a liberal model of prosperity, social security, and openness. The riots reportedly started in reaction to Swedish police killing a 69-year-old machete-wielding man earlier this month. But the ferocity and duration of the violence has shocked locals, who say they're at a loss to explain it. "It's difficult to say why they're doing this," Selcuk Cekenhe, who works at a youth center in one of the affected suburbs, tells NBC News. "Maybe it's anger at the law and order forces, maybe it's anger at their own perso...

'Whatever has happened to Sadhvi Pragya ?'

By Dr. Vijaya Rajiva In the last two to three years that the present writer has been watching the two major English news channels, NDTV and CNN-IBN, there has hardly been even any mention of the young Hindu nun Sadhvi Pragya who has been incarcerated in Indian jails(without evidence) and has been suffering from a variety of illnesses not to mention narco tests and so on. There have also been allegations of torture against her. Apart from an old motorcycle belonging to her (and sold by her before the blasts) and the retracted confession of Aseemanand there seems to be no serious evidence against her in the 2006 Malegaon blast. The liberal press, of course , has tossed words around such as 'Hindu terror'. The latest news is that the NIA will be issuing a supplementary charge sheet against her , Aseemanand and Colonel Purohit. And the NIA has dismissed the cases against some Muslim youths who it is claimed were falsely accused of the blasts....

California (USA) : Hanford City Council in California (USA), incorporated in 1891, will start its day with Hindu invocation on August six, containing verses from world's oldest existing scripture. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the City Council. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English translation of the prayer.Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages. Zed, who is the President of Universal Society of Hinduism, will recite from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He plans to start and end the prayer with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work. Zed is a global Hindu and interfaith leader, who besides taking up...

What is the Religion of Bharat?

P. Deivamuthu, Editor, Hindu Voice (hinduvoicemumbai@gmail.com)   Every country has a religion. USA (whom we try to ape), UK, Australia, Canada, etc. (although Democratic and Secular), proudly say that they are Christian countries. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc. proudly say that they are Islamic countries, although there is no democracy and ‘secularism’. Even Sri Lanka proudly says it is a Buddhist country.   What is the Religion of Bharat? – Islam or Christianity? No. Can it be anything other than Hindu (Sanatan Hindu Dharm)?   If the culture of America is Christian and that of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is Islam, the culture of India is Hindu. Any one trying to hide this Hindu identity is dishonest. Even hard core anti-Hindus like Brinda Karat, Medha Patkar, Teesta Setalvad, Mallika Sarabai, Arundathi Roy, Barkha Dutt, Ambika Soni, and many others, are testifying to this, showing up in saree with a big Bindi on their foreheads. They can hate Hindu religion bu...
