We will win no wars with old weapons

By Priyadarshi Dutta Stephen P Cohen and Sunil Dasgupta, in their book ‘Arming without Aiming: India’s Military Modernization’ (2010) have focused on the dilemmas of India’s militarisation. The core problem is that India is culturally and socially not a militarised state. While the armed forces are praised and are popular, they are not the fulcrum of the nation. India’s diplomatic and military policies are marked by restraint rather than aggression. They are reflective of Indian mind. Military mindset : Nehru versus Subhash Nehru might be blamed in isolation for ruining India’s defence production. But he was conditioned by the matrix of historical-cultural-economic forces. Should a newly independent nation, not self-sufficient in food production, invest in weapons ? Without building up heavy industries (problem addressed in the Second Five Year plan) self-sufficiency in defence production was a chimera. India had achieved its independence by civil...

Happy Independence Day by Team Hindu Terminal

I ndependence Day , observed annually on 15 August, is a National Holiday in India commemorating the nation’s independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947 Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.  " At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.. " The day is observed throughout India with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events. The Indian diaspora celebrates Independence Day around the world with parades and pageants, particularly in regions with ...

Worth Reading : India’s age old scientific temper and the Mangalyaan Mission

More than a week ago when the nation was celebrating the success of the Mangalayan project, senior journalist Nikhil Wagle tweeted thus: The most obvious first question: Is it a crime for scientists to visit temples and to practice their faith?  Is bestowing honors to Balaji before Mangalyaan’s success equal to scoffing at rational enquiry which is the edifice of science research?  I don’t remember any ISRO scientist claiming that it was Balaji who put the space project to action so why the gibe? The point made by Wagle and many self-proclaimed rationalists and progressives is that Indians should not stick to their past heritage. This scientific temper business was initiated by the pioneer of Indian secularism, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as claimed in this piece . It is a known fact that Nehru was hugely influenced by ‘Fabian Socialism’ and intellectuals from the erstwhile Union of Socialist Soviet Republic. Following Mangalyaan’s success, many self-proclaime...

It further said that the officials of the premier probe agency CBI have also met the babus of the Environment Ministry twice in April and according to the sources, they are again expected to meet them this month. It is also being said that the number of missing files could go up considerably. In an apparent bid to brush the matter under carpet, an official of the Ministry has reportedly said that the missing files would not affect any major policy decision or Ministry’s action on any industrial group. He also denied that the CBI has been probing into the matter of missing files, saying that they just wanted to know ...

Hindu Elements in Indian Constitution.

Hindu Elements in Indian Constitution. The implication of Hindu Culture and Tradition in Indian Constitution. Upananda Brahmachari | Hindu Existence Bureau | 26 January 2014::  India i.e. Bharat is celebrating its 65th anniversary of adopting its Constitution as it was taken granted on the day of 26 th  January, 1950. We are very much proud for the Indian Constitution and celebrating the Republic Day, but we never look through the Hindu Elements in Indian Constitution or the implication of Hindu Culture and Tradition in it. The partition of India in 1947, made this unique land of cultural unity divided into two pieces on the basis of two nation theory, Hindu-Muslim basis which was undesirable to the majority people.  But, the communal minority Muslims procured their holy land of Pakistan on the strength swords and the cunning politics in connivance of the British who adopted ‘divide-&-rule’ policy. Though least blood shedder and the minimum troub...
