The Stone of Vishnu

W e have all heard about the conical stone Lingam for Lord Shiva (well hopefully you have), but what about a stone for Shri Vishnu? Is there a stone that represents and symbolizes Narayana? Yes, yes there is!  The Shaligram Shila (Shaligram being one of the 108 names of Vishnu , and shila simply means stone ) is a dark rock that can be found lingering along the banks of the Gandaki river in Nepal. Its a holy fossil that has natural imprints of Vishnu's symbols, such as a conch shell or His loyal snake Anatana. Sometimes there are even forms of Narasimha and Varaha (the earlier Divine incarnations of Vishnu) on the shila. These divine black rocks are used to worship Vishnu but the best part is that they are natural and not handcrafted! And according to the puranas they are not only symbols of God, but rather manifestations of God Himself. The Lord resides in many places in which he may be worshipped, but of all the places Salagrama is the best - from the Garu...

Understand the difference in Dharma and Religion...

Understand the difference in Dharma and Religion... The word "dharma" has multiple meanings depending on the context in which it is used. Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary lists several, including: conduct, duty, right, justice, virtue, morality, religion, religious merit, good work according to a right or rule, etc. Many other meanings have been suggested, such as law or "torah" (in the Judaic sense), "logos" (Greek), "way" (Christian) and even 'tao" (Chinese). N one of these is entirely accurate and none conveys the full force of the term in Sanskrit. Dharma has no equivalent in the Western lexicon. Dharma has the Sanskrit root dhri, which means "that which upholds" or "that without which nothing can stand" or "that which maintains the stability and harmony of the universe." Dharma encompasses the natural, innate behavior of things, duty, law, ethics, virtue, etc. Every entity in th...

WHY NARENDRA MODI CAN BE PM?

N arendra M odi’s re-induction into the Bhartiya Janata Party’s( BJP ) Central Parliamentary Board, along with the inclusion of his confidant Amit Shah as the party general secretary, are clear indications that the BJP prime ministerial candidate debate is settled within the party. Modi, the only chief minister to make it to the party’s top decision making body, is also included in the party’s election committee, thereby giving him a say in finalising the candidates for the coming elections. Modi’s elevation, as expected, was not received well by his critics and the Congress. Telecom minister Kapil Sibal was quick to respond with: “The re-induction of Narendra Modi to the BJP’s parliamentary board will cause self-destruction of the BJP.” Scores of editorials and op-eds emphasising why Modi would/should not be the PM of a   diverse and pluralistic society like India , will follow in days to come. It is indeed a bit rich coming from those who endlessly cajole and implore a ...

WEST BENGAL, A ZONE OF SILENCE IN INDIA !

WEST BENGAL, A ZONE OF SILENCE IN INDIA ! Far from what Tagore imagined it to be, the state shows anti-democratic symptoms. All parties are complicit in this  LINK: http://www.livemint.com/ Opinion/ x9ZrrLFPFaSJ6OFG4GSw9J/ West-Bengal-a-zone-of-silen ce-in-India.html by Sandipan Deb --------------- Talk about irony. The opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 6 last Tuesday began with Shah Rukh Khan, filmstar, co-owner of the current champions Kolkata Knight Riders, and brand ambassador for the state of West Bengal, reciting Tagore’s immortal poem: “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high/Where knowledge is free/Where the world has not been broken up into fragments/By narrow domestic walls/ Where words come out from the depth of truth/Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection/Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way/Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit/Where the mind is led forward by thee/Into ever-widening th...
