Assam riots : 12 arrested, Army holds flag march, toll reaches 32

Nine more bodies were recovered from a village in Baksa district on Saturday morning, taking the toll of violence between the Bodos and the Bangladeshi immigrants  in Bodoland Territorial Administration Districts (BTADC) area in Assam to 32. Ahmed Siddique, Minister for Border Areas Development in Assam, said the Bodoland People’s Front is behind the killing. In an emergency meeting of the State Cabinet this afternoon, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi sought a NIA probe into the violence. The bodies of the victims, including four children and two women, were recovered from Khagrabari village under Salbari sub-division adjacent to the Manas National Park, official sources said. Besides Chirang and parts of Dhubri districts, indefinite curfew has also been imposed in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts where 23 people were killed. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s admission in his recent interview to Times Now that “probably some Congressmen” were involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom, and his inability to explain why the “legal process” had been unable to deliver justice (some prominent accused are dead) when cases in the Gujarat riots of 2002 (almost two decades later) were proceeding at a much faster pace, has reopened a festering sore in the national psyche. There has been no closure in the anti-Sikh pogrom because of the sustained determination of the Congress leadership not to sacrifice leaders who were named by eyewitness and media reports of having instigated and led mobs against Sikh-dominated localities, Sikh homes in mixed colonies, Sikh taxi stands and shops and establishments in markets across the Capital.
