At least 27 people were killed in clashes across Bangladesh between police and Islamist group Hefajat-e-Islam, which demanded that the Government enact an anti-blasphemy law and hang atheist bloggers. Recent violence by the Islamists has claimed the lives of at least 40 people since Sunday. The Islamists struck terror in the districts of Narayanganj, Hathazari and Bagerhat on Monday, hours after activists of the group lay siege to Dhaka’s Motijheel area, The Daily Star reported. Twenty of the victims, including two policemen and a BGB soldier, were killed in Narayanganj, six at Hathazari in Chittagong and one in Bagerhat during violence that left more than 200 people injured, the report said. The activists were among thousands demonstrating around Dhaka, blocking roads and cutting off the city from the rest of the country.
