Often Hindus  are accused of not being charitable.The Gurus, Swamis, babas and matas are portrayed as fraudsters only trying to make money out of the gullible public while Hindu organisations are promoted as extremists and terrorists. And individual Hindus are seen as just plain selfish.The Indian and Western media often portrays this image to the world which christian missionaries and others use as propaganda against hinduism to push their agenda to convert Hindus. But worse many Hindus themselves believe the propaganda without checking the facts for themselves. Sure there  are con artists dressed in saffron robes and Hindus who dont care about other Hindus but this is not always the case as there are many Hindu organisations, gurus,sects, groups  like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),Arya Samaj, Iskcon, Art of Living, Mata Amritanandamayi and many more not well known but who are doing tremendous social work on the ground without getting any recognition at all. ...

Akalbodhan

The worship of Devi Durga in the month of Ashwin is called 'Akalbodhan'- an uncustomary time for commencement of the worship. It is so called since the period of this worship differs from the conventional period (during the spring - 'Basanta'). Ramayana says that when Rama was engaged in the fierce battle with Ravana, he wanted to secure the blessings of victory from Devi Durga. He held the puja to evoke the goddess during autumn to his dire plight, thereby worshiping Durga untimely (in Akal). Hence this puja is called Akalbodhon. It was customary to worship Durga with 100 neel kamals (blue lotuses). Rama could gather only 99 of them; he offered one of his eyes as a substitute of the 100th lotus. Do Hindus Worship Idols?

Do Hindus Worship Idols?   The answer to this question is most certainly yes! Hindus do worship idols, but so do Christians, Jews and even Muslims. In fact, it is impossible to conceive of God without some form of idol, for idol worship is the way of religion. Let me explain. In Hinduism there are many words to describe the nature of God, and we will refer to them as the need arises, but in this  regard, the most relevant word is acintya, which means "inconceivable," "beyond thought." The true nature of God is, therefore, beyond the ability of human beings to understand, yet we have a need to reach out in our mind and try to conceive of God, so we create an image of God in our minds. This mental image of God is an idol. Most people, including Hindus, think of an idol solely as a graven or carved image and, while this is true, an idol is a carved image, it is also a form that begins in the mind. It is a mental form.
