Poll violence in West Bengal claims 7 lives, 740 injured

Poll violence has so far claimed seven lives in West Bengal and left 740 persons injured in 825 incidents, Election Commission sources said. While one person lost his life in Nadia district late in the month of March, the second death took place at Jalangi in Murshidabad district in early April, followed by the third death in Birbhum and fourth death at Manikchak under Malda district also in the last month, OSD in CEO’s office, Amit Roy Chowdhury said here. Apart from these, two poll deaths had taken place in the State on April 26, the sources said adding Prahlad Roy of CPI(M) died in a clash at ghatal in West Midnapore, while Amitabha Panja of Trinamool Congress died in another clash at Hatgobindapur in Burdwan district. The seventh death was also reported from the West Midnapore district late last month when a CPI(M) supporter died in a clash in Keshpur area, Roy Chowdhury said. After Coalgate, 45 crucial Environment Ministry files go missing

  In an analogy of the missing files of Coal Ministry, at least 45 important files related to policy matters and industrial projects have reportedly gone missing from the Environment Ministry (MoEF). According to a report published in DNA, most of these files belong to the period when Jayanthi Natarajan and Veerappa Moily were in-charge of the Ministry. It further said that the officials of the premier probe agency CBI have also met the babus of the Environment Ministry twice in April and according to the sources, they are again expected to meet them this month. It is also being said that the number of missing files could go up considerably. Assam riots : 12 arrested, Army holds flag march, toll reaches 32

Nine more bodies were recovered from a village in Baksa district on Saturday morning, taking the toll of violence between the Bodos and the Bangladeshi immigrants  in Bodoland Territorial Administration Districts (BTADC) area in Assam to 32. Ahmed Siddique, Minister for Border Areas Development in Assam, said the Bodoland People’s Front is behind the killing. In an emergency meeting of the State Cabinet this afternoon, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi sought a NIA probe into the violence. The bodies of the victims, including four children and two women, were recovered from Khagrabari village under Salbari sub-division adjacent to the Manas National Park, official sources said. Besides Chirang and parts of Dhubri districts, indefinite curfew has also been imposed in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts where 23 people were killed. The Army has been staging flag marches in the violence-hit areas to instill confidence among people and to bring the situation under control, sources said.
