Significance of numbers in Hinduism!

"The ingenious method of expressing every possible number using a set of ten symbols (each symbol having a place value and an absolute value) emerged in India. The idea seems so simple nowadays that its significance and profound importance is no longer appreciated. Its simplicity lies in the way it facilitated calculation and placed arithmetic foremost amongst useful inventions."  -Laplace, a French mathematician In this new series and post we will try to explain the symbol ic significance of numbers from one to ten from Hindu perspective and their association with some important concepts and divinities of Hinduism. It also explores how ancient Indians used these numbers to organize the information they had about creation and the order of divinities in a systematic way to arrive at a picture of Hindu cosmology from a numerical perspective. Most of the information that is provided in this article is a product of this writer's intuitive awareness and personal study and i...

Dhamma for everyone...

Talk given on October 5, 1960 by Ajaan Lee Dhammadharo (Phra Suddhidhammaransi Gambhiramedhacariya) Translated from the Thai by Thanissaro Bhikkhu Dhamma for everyone...  Now I'm going to remind you of some of the Buddha's teachings as a way of encouraging you to be intent on practicing correctly in line with the Buddha's instructions. These teachings are called Dhamma. The Dhamma is an ornament for the mind. It's also a means for developing the faculties of the mind. The teachings I'm about to discuss come in the OvadaPatimokkha, the Patimokkha Exhortation. This is a talk that deals with the duties of those who have ordained in line with the Buddha's instructions, but these practices also apply to lay people as well. Lay people can take these practices and train themselves to be good people, so that they can be eyes and ears, legs, feet, and hands, to help look after the work of the religion and to help it prosper. These guidelines, which apply to all of us,...

Can't Buy A Channel? Buy A Few Journalists..

Sometime back I  wrote : “ Does Reliance really expect to earn money from an investment in TV-18 group? Does it expect to earn money from any media group? With investments like 1500 or 2000 crores, which is peanuts for Reliance, what do they really aim to earn? Your guess is as good as mine ”. The answer seems pretty obvious. And the answer comes from a media celeb himself. Yes, none other than  Shekhar Gupta  of Indian Express. Towards the end of their careers some politicians and some journalists do wonder about the legacy they are going to leave behind. I tweeted sometime back with a generous dose of caution that Shekhar Gupta (SG) is trying to turn a new leaf, a different corner. No, I’m not doing any psycho-analysis of SG but his articles since December 2012 appear to be more of confessions than opinions. I am quite positive that apart from SG many other media celebs including Barkha Dutt, Rajdeep Sardesai etc. are going through a phase of introspection. It...

Ancient fire ritual has positive impact on environment: Scientists

Ancient fire ritual has positive impact on environment: Scientists A 4,000 year old fire ritual conducted in the remote village in Kerala in April this year has a positive impact on the atmosphere, soil and other environment effects, according to scientists who are now ready with their findings. The “Athirathram” ritual held at Panjal village in Thrissur district was the focus of a detailed stud y by a team of scientists led by Prof V P N Nampoori, former director of the International School of Photonics, Cochin University of Science and Technology. The scientists had focused on the fire ritual’s scientific dimensions and impact on the atmosphere, soil and its micro—organisms and other potential environmental effects. The yagna seems to have accelerated the process of seed germination and also the microbial presence in air, water and soil in and around the region of the fire ritual is vastly diminished, according to a statement released by the Varthathe Trust, who organised ...

Are Vegetarian and Vegans Diets Healthy? Do they get all the needed vitamins, minerals, proteins etc?

Are Vegetarian and Vegans Diets Healthy? Do they get all the needed vitamins, minerals, proteins etc? I totally understand that it is a completely personal choice. It is human nature to put down things that we don't want to accept or which make us uncomfortable in our own skin.  MUST: I know this is a LONG READ but if you give 5-10 mins. of your time you would REALLY UNDERSTAND how much it is WORTH!! PLEASE READ>>>>>> The fact is Vegetarianism has traditionally been linke d to the people of ancient India. Even today, Indians make up for more than 70 percent of the world's vegetarian population. Today, six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish, or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. The post was not religious in any way or based on the fact that in Hinduism and other Eastern religions eating meat is n...

Is Eating Meat Wrong?

Is Eating Meat Wrong? In spiritualism we often come across this fundamental question. Why should any one eat only vegetarian food? There are arguments and counter arguments about what we should and should not eat. Some people argue that it does not matter what you eat as long as you are leading a pure life and do not have craving for a particular kind of food. They cite the lives of prophets like  Jesus and the Buddha who had no like or dislike for any food. Others argue that the prophets were above human and we should not compare ourselves with them. Even though the Buddha did seem to have no particular preference for any food, the Buddhist monastic discipline clearly specifies certain food as forbidden for the monks. Hindu religious law books also specify certain types of food as forbidden for consumption unless ones life is in danger because of starvation. Is meat eating really bad? Is it acceptable if one eats meat as long as one is not directly killing the animal? To answer...
