Congress demands ban on EVMs with multiple buttons, says they mislead voters

After extending their  support to a consideration  by the Election Commission to ban opinion polls as they apparently mislead voters, the Congress has sought another ban, this time on Electronic Voting Machines with multiple buttons on similar grounds. “Electronic Voting Machines with multiple buttons are very likely to leave the voter confused and lost. Not only do they mislead the voter, but they also end up wasting a lot of time as the voter has to scan the length and breadth of the EVM to finally high-five his hand with the one on the EVM..err..cast his franchise,” opined Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi. When asked about what is permissible during election time, Alvi said, “We have no problems if there are reality shows like Bigg Boss and Indian Idol running during election days. A lot of people will cast their vote for participants over there and voter turnout for the general elections will dwindle. But the important point is that because of this, the number of vo...

Divinity in Hinduism: The Supreme Female Form – A Message to Remember on Diwali

I bring positive greetings to you on this festive and most holy observance of Diwali. I have offered to make a small verbal contribution to this observance today on this Hindu holy occasion of Diwali and as such I would like to invite a few minutes of your attention as I proceed with this delivery, purposefully titled Divinity in Hinduism: The Supreme Female Form; A Message to Remember. In the early  months of 2013, following the gruesome and fatal sexual assault on a female Medical Student in a Bus in New Delhi India, and a few other such atrocities, unrelated but certainly newsworthy and also having occurred in India in the months that followed, a rapid stream of both local and international media attention have been focused on the incidence of these, whilst not widespread, but most malicious, vexatious, and indeed ruinous attacks criminally perpetrated by a handful few in the Indian landscape. At the height however of the frenzied and inevitably best-seller and sensati...

During Diwali, these lights are kept on during the night and Hindus wear new clothes and clean their homes to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Families also wear new clothes. There are a number of legends associated with Diwali. In northern India, the festival celebrates the return of Rama after being exiled for 14 years. In Gujarat, the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. In oth...

London : Christian Inculturation at Diwali Event with the blessings of the VHP

The 11th Diwali celebration at the Ilford Exchange  (london)  passed uneventfully except for for the underhand insertion of a tribute to Jesus performed by the young BharatNatyam artiste . It was the penultimate item in a programme of South Indian classical dance. A discerning on looker  having come to participate in a celebration of the Hindu festival of Diwali, was at first puzzled , then confused, finally realising that the dance /music item struck a discordant note Such underhand manipulations are bad enough but what was even worse was the reaction of a Diwali Organizing Committee member who also holds a senior position at the local VHP temple. The confused onlooker contacted  the said committee member to express their concerns only to be airily dismissed by him and patronisingly admonished not to hold divisive and sectarian views. The original  communication of protest  was forwarded to the person responsible for ,among other things ,...
