HRDI condemns the arrest of Tapan Ghosh ,

Human Rights Defense International thoroughly condemns the arrest of Shri Tapan Ghosh, President, Hindu Samhati by the Kolkata Police. The arrest of Tapan Ghosh on March 14, 2013 by the Kolkata Police under several non-bailable sections of the IPC smacks of vindictiveness. As per our information he was not present anywhere near Jalaberia, Dist 24 Parganas (South), West Bengal as alleged by the prosecution. The murder of Maulana Rohul Quddus by unidentified gunmen on February 18, 2013 had provoked a fury amongst Muslims in various parts of South 24 Parganas district.According to an Indian Express report February 20, 2013 police met with stiff resistance when it tried to take away Quddus’ body for post-mortem. Several of its officers were hurt and vehicles burnt.
The whole segment of Cannings was disturbed. The Muslim ire turned upon the Hindus, who are a helpless minority in that area. Many Hindu houses were burnt and their women molested. There is documentary evidence of the collateral losses suffered by them in the wake of the violence. In Jalaberia, 16 Hindu labourers were abducted by the Muslim goons. The Hindus of that area were already at receiving end. It is a pity that West Bengal government appears to be abdicating its responsibility of punishing the perpetrators. It is going after the hapless victims and hounded Hindu community.
We call upon the West Bengal government to withdraw cases framed against Tapan Ghosh and release him forthwith. The state is the guarantor and protector of human rights. It is a pity that the West Bengal govt is reneging its duty. It is hounding the victims and targetting Hindu leaders for political considerations. In undivided Bengal, Hindus were in a minority 45:55. West Bengal was carved out as a turf where life, honour and political rights of Hindus could be safeguarded. But such outlook of the West Bengal government constitutes an act of betrayal.
