Narendra Modi on the move, his minders run digital war room for next big shows
On April 26, Narendra Modi was in Haridwar in the morning, meeting saints at an event hosted by Baba Ramdev. By evening, he was in Gandhinagar, meeting actor John Abraham who was here to promote Shootout at Wadala. Immediately after, he met Suzuki Motors' chairman Osamu Suzuki, all on the same day. Within minutes, the events converted into tweets, blog posts and emails, with an option of replaying the public speech part.
Incumbents of the now plush new Chief Ministers' Office (CMO) will tell you how Chief Minister Narendra Modi works on an algorithmic programme controlled by a special software that helps his office decide and strategise his itinerary.
Walk into his office and you see the staff intently studying his Facebook account and Twitter handle and working on pie charts to ensure their boss has an effective visibility without losing a moment.
Be it finalising appointments or a post-analysis on how his time was spent, use of information technology is central to making sure he is at the right place at the right time.
Graphical analytical charts are generated using a dedicated software on daily, weekly and monthly basis by his office to closely monitor time management, especially when his tours outside Gujarat have increased with his projection as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections.
Sample this: last month, he addressed different types of events, like FICCI Ladies Organisation function in Delhi, an event organised by chambers of commerce in Kolkata and so forth.
On a daily basis, his staff feeds information of his schedule into a software that automatically generates flowcharts and pie charts analysing how many hours, minutes and seconds were spent by him, and where and how. The result is a detailed report annexing information on how many times Modi attended political rallies or inaugurations, meetings or public events. This helps his office plan an itinerary that helps him cover all sections of society and regions. They also identify the ignored and troubled sections or regions and advise him to spend time there.
The final prioritising however, is done by Modi himself, after looking at the graphs and charts before him.
"The CM has been using technology to keep in touch with the people's pulse. The way he decides on his appointments is best example of this," said Hiren Joshi, Officer on Special Duty (technical) in CMO.
Sources say that every morning, Modi goes through a message board that contains a gist of some 100 emails shortlisted by his staff from over 1,000 messages that he receives in form of invitations, suggestions, complaints, appreciation and criticism, to decide his future calendar.
Modi apparently does not have an email ID anymore. His contact with the outside world is mostly by Facebook and Twitter or his official portal narendramodi.in, where anyone can request a meeting or send complaints or messages, mind you, in not more than 500 words.
Little wonder that he was invited to virtually address Google Big Tent summit on March 22 where he also interacted with Google chief Eric Schmidt.
