India dominated the world GDP for 1500 years from 1 BCE to 1500 AD. The GDP of India was ~ 30% during this time with China on the second spot. The U.S. was non-existent/negligible in GDP at 0.01%.
Thats the reason why explorers were losing their lives finding a sea route to India??
