The incident came just hours before BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was to address a rally in the Bihar capital. |
Hours ahead of BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s Hunkar rally in Patna on Sunday, a crude bomb exploded at a public toilet at Patna Railway Station at platform no. 10. Five person has reportedly succumbed to his injuries in the explosion and another bomb found in the bathroom has been defused. Reports suggest that two more live bombs have been found and a bomb squad is on way to diffuse them. Timers had been used to trigger these bombs, sources say.
Moreover reports coming in claim a series of 6 blasts near Elphinston cinema and Twin Tower and near rally site.
Additional forces of Bihar police have been rushed to the Railway Station and the bomb disposal squad has also been sent there.
The bomb exploded near the door of a newly created toilet on platform number 10 of Patna junction in which one person was injured, Railway and GRP officials said.
The railway station is barely two kilometers from Gandhi Maidan, venue of the ‘Hoonkar rally’ to be addressed by BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Modi.
The injured person who was inside the toilet was first taken to the railway hospital and later rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), RK Singh, spokesman of Danapur Railway division said.
Immediately after the blast, bomb disposal personnel came to the spot and recovered two crude bombs, Railway Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sinha said.
The injured later succumbed to his injuries, reports said.
However, TV reports claimed that three people have been so far killed in the serial blast.
Meanwhile, RPN Singh, MoS Home on blasts in Patna said, “There were 5 blasts in Gandhi Maidan, 20 people injured there.”
Meanwhile, the Bihar DGP confirmed that six explosions have so far been reported inside the Gandhi Maidan, all low intensity blasts. Police have also arrested a suspect from the rally ground.
“Even after this lawlessness following the blasts, we are ready for the rally,Narendra Modiji will address rally,” said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
All the 11 trains booked by BJP for the rally had arrived much before the blast, Station Manager of Patna Junction Raju Kumar said.
The BJP demanded a probe into the incident and said its supporters will not be deterred by it.
Senior Superintendent of Police of Patna Manu Maharaj visited Patna junction.
Patna City SP Jaykant said that security arrangements had been scaled up at the station.
The Patna Rail SP said that the toilet where the blast took place was shut down.
The incident triggered a political slugfest between BJP and its former ally JDU.
“This blast cannot stop the youth from being part of Modi’s rally. There is anger among people and they want to get rid of Congress and also other parties who are standing with it,” BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
“Investigation should be done so as to find out who is behind it,” he said.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said that the blast had put a question mark on security arrangements for such a big occasion.
Meanwhile, the MHA has taken the issue seriously and sought a report from Bihar administration after the first blast went off at 9:15 am in the morning.
The Home Ministry told the State Government to send a report about the nature of the bomb, suspected persons or organisations which could be behind it and steps taken to maintain law and order, official sources said.
The Centre has also decided to send a team of explosive experts of the NIA to help the Bihar police in post-blast investigation, they said.
